Small-group learning Hands-on kitchen training Certificate on completion

Learn with a chef who lives the work.

At 51, Ben Richards has spent 37 years in kitchens and hospitality: growing food on farms, serving in fine-dining restaurants and high-end hotels, and working in the occasional dodgy, high-vibe hole in the wall. His culinary grounding includes experience in a two-hatted kitchen—Australia’s equivalent of Michelin-starred recognition.

His deeper passion is the healing arts. Since choosing raw living food as his full-time path in 2009, Ben has brought these worlds together in a singular offering here in Bali. He founded The Seeds of Life Raw Food Chef Academy in Ubud in 2012—not simply to teach recipes, but to share a way of living.

Training unfolds at a dedicated Ubud retreat centre, with fully equipped kitchen facilities and on-site accommodation available. You work hard and learn deeply through the day, then step straight into the comfort of your room—giving the food, practice, and community time to settle in.

A training is only as good as the people, place, and practice behind it. Seeds of Life brings together lived raw-vegan experience, professional culinary craft, formal plant-based study, and a café that has served this way of life for more than a decade.

01 · Lived practice 18 years thriving raw

Ben has lived a raw-vegan lifestyle for 18 years. The teaching comes from a practice that has been tested in real life, every day.

02 · Culinary grounding 37 years in kitchens

From farms and fine dining to two-hatted Australian kitchens, Ben brings a chef’s eye for flavour, technique, service, and quality.

03 · Study & service Education put into action

Cornell plant-based nutrition study meets 13 years of service at Seeds of Life—a working café built around living, plant-forward food.

04 · Personal tuition The human difference

Ben’s energy and passion are infectious. In a small residential group, he makes sure each student is seen, supported, and leaves with the confidence and skills they came for.

A two-week living foods incubator

The training takes place in Bali, surrounded by extraordinary local produce. Each morning, freshly picked fruit and vegetables arrive from organic farms on the active volcanic slopes of Kintamani. Most of the produce we use is organic, grown locally whenever possible, and chosen at its freshest—one of the main reasons Ben has chosen Bali as the premier location for preparing and teaching raw food.

Whether you want to open a café, expand your existing chef skills, add raw food items to your menu, or simply prepare nourishing, creative, well-balanced meals at home — you will be professionally and intimately taught by the man who built Bali's most celebrated raw vegan institution.

What you will learn

Module 01
Raw Food Foundations
The science and philosophy of raw living foods — enzymes, life force, nutritional integrity. Why heating food above 40°C destroys what matters most.
Module 02
Flavour Combinations & Techniques
Flavour profiling and balancing are the fine adjustments that define a great dish, dessert, or drink—the difference that creates the wow. This is where a chef’s education begins, and it applies far beyond raw food: take it into any dishes you love to prepare.
Module 03
Kitchen Mastery & Tools
Every essential raw food kitchen tool — spiralisers, high-speed blenders, dehydrators, mandolines — with hands-on practice until confident.
Module 04
Superfoods & Tonic Herbs
Cacao, goji, bee pollen, marine phytoplankton. Taoist tonic herbalism. How to build a nutrient-dense daily protocol that requires less, not more.
Module 05
Raw Chocolates & Desserts
Ben's signature soft-centred tonic-herb-filled raw chocolates. Dessert that is simultaneously a powerful nutrient delivery system.
Module 06
Indonesian Herbal System
A guided session with Nadis Herbals — Indonesia's traditional herbal wisdom woven into the curriculum. Jamu, roots, leaves, and Balinese healing plants.
Module 07
Protein, Amino Acids & Nutrition
Debunking myths. How to meet your RDA from plant sources. Weight management, detox, and the body's incredible self-healing capacity when given the chance.
Module 08
Running a Raw Food Business
From home kitchen to café. Menu design, costing, sourcing organic suppliers in tropical climates, and what makes the Seeds of Life model work.
Module 09
Transition & Lifestyle Integration
How to bring this home. Maintaining momentum. Emotional attachments to food. Building a practice that sustains, not one that overwhelms.

The most beautiful way
to begin a new year.

Over two weeks, you learn every corner of the craft through diligent, hands-on practice. Then comes the culmination: create your own dishes, prepare food for a larger group, and bring it to the table with confidence.

For the New Year’s Eve graduation dinner, we invite the Seeds of Life community to celebrate with you. Guests ask what inspired a dish, how you brought its flavours together, and what you have discovered along the way. It is a real, generous moment of service—not just a classroom exercise.

Things people ask

Do I need prior cooking experience?
None required. We will meet your experience level where you are at. The training welcomes professional chefs looking to expand their repertoire and first-timers equally. All skill levels are welcome.
Is it 100% raw the entire time?
The training is raw food focused, but the philosophy isn't dogmatic. It's about 100% health, not 100% raw as a rigid rule. Ben teaches you to understand why raw living foods are beneficial, so you can make your own informed choices. The curriculum does include tonic herbalism, which involves some heat-processed preparations.
What is the cancellation policy?
Places are held by paying the full amount. Cancellation refunds: 8+ weeks before start — 100% refund, less a 10% handling fee. 4–8 weeks before — 50% refund, less 10% handling fee. Less than 4 weeks — no refund. Flights are not included and you should arrange your own airline refund. We strongly recommend travel insurance covering repatriation.
What are the check-in / check-out times?
Check in at 1:00pm on the first day. Welcome meeting at 5:00pm — please be there for this. Check out at 11:00am on the final day. Airport transfers are not included. The villa is 15 minutes' drive from Ubud centre, and Ben can share trusted driver details if needed.
Are there scholarships or discounts?
Yes — an Indonesian scholarship is available for Indonesian nationals, and an influencer discount is available for qualifying applicants. Email ben@theseedsoflife.net with your enquiry and details about yourself.
What's the group size?
Intentionally intimate. Ben teaches this personally, not through assistants. Group size is kept small to ensure individual attention and a genuine learning environment, not a mass course.
